St. Andrew’s Church is a growing, dynamic community, with many new faces, all striving to love God and each other more closely. A key part of our hospitality to people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities is keeping our buildings clean and safe. Use of our buildings and grounds is split equally between our Sunday morning worship and our many smaller midweek meetings of church and community groups. Roughly ten times a year we have large non-Sunday gatherings, such as weddings, funerals or group retreats. Our buildings and grounds have been especially well-tended over the last decade, with additional improvements ongoing. Special building projects are led by a team of active members in collaboration with the Rector (Pastor) and Sexton.
Job Summary
The Sexton sustains the use of our buildings, grounds and furnishings by cleaning and maintaining them, and ensuring they are accessible, safe and ready for the services or meetings that have been planned. We seek a Sexton who is handy, a curious learner and problem-solver, who works independently. Maintaining an active, collaborative relationship with the church staff and congregational leaders is essential. The position requires personal fitness adequate to complete the listed responsibilities within the allotted hours, as well as good organizational skills, reliable communication, and a willingness to use these personal gifts in support of the church’s mission and ministry.
This position is configured as 16 hours/week (40% full-time equivalent) with two weeks of paid leave annually. Weekly hours vary seasonally to accommodate, weddings, funerals, major worship services and the five weeks during the year when we host intensive week-long ministry events. Work schedule shall be arranged with and approved by the Rector. Compensation for 2026 is $23,000/year. After an initial three month review, annual reviews will be held with the Rector.
Responsibilities
The Sexton is responsible for cleaning the buildings, setting up for and breaking down after church events, performing light maintenance, observing and reporting larger maintenance needs, coordinating regularly-scheduled inspections of building systems, and assisting in coordination of repairs by outside contractors. The Sexton reports to the Rector. The Sexton’s work is undertaken in collaboration with the Rector, Staff, Buildings & Grounds Committee and other parishioners.
