There were many uses for these little cupboard commodes, but the original intent was to use them in bedrooms.
The drawers held personal items and sometimes a towel and a washcloth. Behind the two bottom doors was kept the "thunder jug," and there was usually a washbowl and a pitcher of water on the top surface.
Many of these commodes, especially the earlier ones (before bathrooms), had a backsplash with candle or kerosene lamp holders. Many of them also had towel racks.
