Rare Early 1900's Antique Kidney Style Writing Desk from France, appears to be dated 2-20-1914 and #5 of 469 made. Very good condition for its age. Off white aged painted finish with gold gilding, fluted legs with original casters (one is loose), five drawers all slide nicely with a center drawer operating lock and original key included. Top surface is in very good condition for 112 years old with a couple of minor wood panel separations on the right side, and a beautifully painted letter and quill pen. One of my French Canadian friends tells me the writing on the letter means something like "Always Good News". All brass handles are in great shape with original flathead screws. The brass trim edging around the top could use some straightening and the footrest caning has some damage from use. My mother bought this desk from a close friend in 1970, and it was never really used except for a display in our living room, and eventually my mother's bedroom at our house. $2000 OBO
Here is a very similar desk for sale at a dealer in New Orleans for $1850 in worse condition with no footrest, no handles, less decoration and no gilding:
