I am a cybersecurity major nearing the completion of my Bachelor of Science degree. I chose cybersecurity because I want to help protect my family, friends and country from the ever increasing cyber threats that we are confronted with on a daily basis. I've recently discovered that a majority of my friends and family do not backup the data on their computers and mobile devices, with their primary excuse being that they don't know how to properly perform these backups. My goal is not only to backup my customers data, but to also teach them how to perform backups for themselves to help ensure that all their data is readily available to restore should the need ever arise. Here are a few things I've learned over the course of my education: 1) All hard drives will fail at some point, even Solid State drives have a limit to the number of times you can read/write to them. That being said, the average user will probably never reach that limit, but the fact remains that every hard drive will fail at some point in time; 2) You should store your backup data either on a cloud server or on an external drive that is stored off site. If storing it offsite is not feasible, then at the very least your backup drive(s) need to be stored in a fire and water proof safe. Treat your data backup the same way you treat your cherished family photographs and legal documents, and; 3) Do NOT keep your backup drive connected to your computer. Should you be unfortunate enough to get hit with ransomware, then your backup will be rendered absolutely useless if it is attached to your computer when the infection occurs.
In doing some research, it appears that Best Buy charges a minimum of $99 to perform a backup of 100GB or less. Staples charges $69.99. With both, you have to take your computer or device to their stores in order to have the services performed. Since I'm just starting out, I'm charging $50 to backup 100GB or less of data, with the hope that you won't ever need my services again once I've taught you the skills necessary to perform the backups yourself. Also, you will be required to either purchase an external drive or subscribe to a cloud service, both of which I can assist you with should you desire. If you're more than 10 miles outside of Bedford, then there will be an additional $5 mileage charge.
