This wonderful hardcover book titled “Grandville's Animals: The World's Vaudeville” is a collection of whimsical illustrations of anthropomorphic animals satirizing 19th century society by the French caricaturist J.J. Grandville. Grandville (the pseudonym of Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, 1803-1847) was a pioneer of anthropomorphic illustration and this book showcases his famous satirical drawings of animals in human clothing and poses, which mock the behavior and politics of Victorian society. The illustrations in this collection are primarily drawn from two of Grandville's major 19th-century works: Les Métamorphoses du jour(1829) and Scenes from the Private and Public Life of Animals (1842). Grandville's work is cited as a significant precursor to Surrealism and a major influence on other famous illustrators like John Tenniel (who illustrated Alice in Wonderland) and Edward Lear. Published in 1981 by Thames & Hudson, this volume features 72 illustrations—23 in full color—and includes an introduction by Bryan Holme. Approx 9.5” x 8.5”. This edition is sought after by collectors for its high-quality color reproduction and craftsmanship.
