i dont understand, one rescues reasons and help/advice

I know I am one of the rescues who has made this an issue-

I was asking $450 for puppies that came from SC and I know that looks like I am selling them and making money

But if you saw what was behind the scenes of these dogs you would understand.

First, I had to pay various amounts to the rescue they came from plus a transport fee. Total was a little over $800 plus the gas and 16 hour day it took for me to get them[the trnasport was late so we waited for an extra 4 hours]

Then it got worse. We broke with parvo and spent over $2200 at CAVES, $900 in tamiflu, $600 in IV fluids and anitbiotics, currently unadded amounts if special food trying to keep them eating, and I am sure I am forgetting some stuff.

Then you have the regular stuff- vaccines, wormers, bedding and food which for me has ranged around $100-$150 week. and because of the parvo they had to stay longer so I have been caring for them since May 10th.

Not to mention the near $700 in kennels and flooring. plus collars, leads, food bowls, toys and treats etc.

and we still have spay/neuter which is $200 approx. for me- a little less for a neuter and more for a spay. and then the rabies, health certs, and microchips.

So my expenses in the dogs has been enormous and $450 won't even begin to cover my expenses.
ALL of this has been out of my own pocket. And my fiance's was out of work for a month, I have a 10 month old child, and my own animals so I truly did not have extra money to spare.

Now I have decided to be flexable on the fee and see what can be done but it at least has to cover the remaining medical as I just have nothing left. no credit cards, no nothing.

Okay, so if anyone out there has some advice on what I can do here so that my fee can be reasonable and I can still not end up in complete bankruptcy I would truly appreciate it.

I can also say that in talking to other rescues and breeders I have heard that they feel anything under $500 is reasonable especially if you have as much as I do in them. And I know one shepherd rescue who charges $400 for a purebred shepherd. I honestly do not feel that the price should be different in rescue based on purebred or mixed breed.

This is just MHO and plea for any advice or help. Please- I am truly not trying to make a profit. Just keep my house.

They are suppose to have an exam done, fecal done and what ever else is required to receive a new health certificates from a vet in NH and be current on all vacs/shots. All rescues or people "adopting out" dogs or pups must have a liscense with the Depart. of Agriculture of NH. They must upon request show you their liscense, and have it posted in plain view, plus must supply their health certificates and vetting information upon request before adopting. So know your leagal rights as an adopter.

Housebreaking is part of having any puppy... and unfortunately your dog's previous owner wasn't honest about it. However, with any dog you never know for sure what issues may come up. We just finished training our puppy to go out. You basically need to watch it like a hawk when your home and take it out as soon as it starts sniffing like it has to go. Eventually it makes the connection that it needs to go outside because you have taken it out every time it had to go. We also gave our pup treats or verbal praise directly after doing his business. It's much like having a baby and requires time and energy. Accidents will happen...even once and a while with a trained dog. Also, just FYI dogs are expensive pets, because they do need to be spayed/neutered and may develop other health issues. We have spent $2,000 on our dog this year with general vet. related expenses. I understand that money is tight for everyone, but it is a reality of having a dog. Good luck with your training.

I got these two kittys to add to our home 6 months ago but come to find out they don't get along with my other kitty and try and beat each other up all the time I've been trying to figure something out to get them to play nice together but nothing is working so know I have to keep them seperate. They did come from a home where they were the only animals so I think that is why they are like this, I think they would do awesome being the only kittys in the house. They are awesome cats very unique they are both siamese mix. I have been seeing an astonishing amount of "urgent" rehomings here on CL. What has made these animals so unwanted or undesirable that you must IMMEDIATELY dump your pets? I understand some circumstances warrant it but some posters don't even give a rational reason in their posts. You are pleading with people on here to unload your burden but it doesn't seem you have even done your homework. You have a computer to post on CL, so why don't you use it to look up other shelters in this area? Try googling "Safer"- it is a rescue in Hampton, NH and they are great. You are going to post your animals on here and try to get them out of your homes ASAP- why not find an appropriate rescue or foster to house them until a GOOD home is found, not just ANY home other than your own. Take some responsibility and do some leg work on behalf of your own animals who are supposedly part of your families! Please...

First of all, this may not have contributed to your rats' deaths because I've never seen any rats react to it that quickly but pine is not a good bedding for rats as they are prone to respiratory problems and the fibers in pine and some other types of wood tend to be toxic. I would switch instead to some other sort of bedding. I myself use carefresh as it is very absorbent and resistent to odors as well as being safe for rats.

As far as the issue with the unexpected deaths I would disinfect the cage again with something more powerful. However, if you already cleaned it once I dont think that that's the origin of the sickness. Sometimes very strong viruses or bacteria can live for long periods of time in unexpected places. I would also disinfect anywhere that your previous rats were allowed to free roam and I would throw away anything that they touched within a short time of their death. Buy new food, a food dish and a new water bottle as those are more places that bacteria or viruses could be hanging around. Also, in some very rare cases, humans themselves can carry illnesses that they may not be aware of and pass it on to their rats. I would wait at least a couple of months before deciding to get more. Most importantly, the next time that you try to introduce rats to eachother, you MUST quarantine the incoming rat. It is very common to bring rats home from pet stores (and yes, even respectable breeders) and have them carry something that wipes out a whole colony. put them in a seperate cage in a seperate airspace from your existing rats and observe him/her for two weeks. If they show any sign of illness take it to the vet or take it back from where it came. After you take it to the vet and medicate it, then start the quarantine process again. If you get a full 2 weeks without signs of illness then you can safely introduce it to your rats.

If the cat really is a danger to your child that should be your first priority. Spray it with the garden hose so it goes away.
If you have a cage or cat carrier capture it to keep the child safe
and on Monday take it to the humane society.
Clean the child's scratches with soap and put antibiotic ointment on them. If they begin to look at all infected get that child to the doctor. You have no idea what infections the cat may have. You also have no idea what may have been under the cat's nails which is now scratched into your child's face.

I read your note on CL, and also the responses. First, your cat may have hookworms, but that's not what you are seeing. You can't see hookworms with the naked eye. If they are small like little pieces or rice, and probably stuck to her rectal area, they are tapeworms. Regular worming medicine for roundworms etc. will not kill tapeworms, so you will have to go to your vet for the medicine. Also, the good news is, they are easy to prevent. They are transmitted by fleas. Fleas carry the tapeworm larva, and when your cat has these fleas on her body and grooms herself, she is ingesting the fleas with the larva, that then grow into tapeworms. So have your Vet give you the medicine for the tapeworm, then get a good flea preventative like Advantage or Frontline while you are there.

Now if the worms are long and stringy like spaghetti, those are roundworms and a different story. Either way, I would not recommend over the counter medicine for them.

We have a stray cat that lives in our garage, since we felt bad for it and my son loves cats we tried to keep it in our home but it wasnt in our home for more then 10 min and it snapped at our son for going near her when she was eating. It is at our steps constantly for food and attention, it is very cuddley. Im sure with the right home and attention it would make the perfect pet, i think its female. I called the humane society they told me to call the police because they have animal control but i had to leave a message and they said it could be at least 3 days before hearing from them. My son is way too rough with it when its out on our steps so our son got scratched pretty good in the face, there is no way to get this cat out of here and away from my son unless i find some where for it to go, it is such a cuddley sweet cat as long as its not roughly handled and let just say my son is far from easy and doesnt know better. So please if anyone out there thinks they can help please let me know and e-mail me. I hate to see a cat left out in the cold.

JoJo is a beautiful 7 month old. He is a pure bred mix who was rescued along with his sister from Athens County Animal Control in GA. His sister went to a coworker of mine and now I am seeking out a perfect home for JoJo. He is 64 pounds of pure energy and love! Walks best on a leash- does alot of jumping off leash and will need an owner who will work with him on manners. We have been working on "sit" and he is picking it up rather quickly. He is very intelligent and figured out how to scale his open topped crate, thus leading to a ceiling being applied! He is an escape artist so I do ask that the new adopter has a High-fenced in area or invisible fence. I also ask that if there are children in the house, they be older children. I do believe he will settle with time and patience however, he does not know his own size or strength and may inadvertently injur a little one. He is great with other dogs and even with his size, has taken on the submissive role. He is curious about cats but also mainitains a healthy fear of them. He loves ALL people so far and wants to be accepted by everyone desperately! He has not been very interested in his chew toys (needs more intelectual stimulation like a Kong with a treat inside). JoJo seems to constantly be trying to figure something out. He may do very well with an obedience class or even some agility training. He is neutered, UTD on all shots, microchipped,heartworm neg, frontlined and dewormed. An adoption fee is asked to cover expenses and I provide all paperwork and have reciepts available as well. Our puppy is recuperating after stomach surgery to remove a huge mass because he ingested a tiny bit of glue.
Gorilla Glue is a toxic, destructive, dangerous substance, and there is barely any warning on the label about how horrible it is. In addition to being caustic and irritating to the stomach, once an animal has eaten some, it expands to many times its size inside the stomach, creating a solid mass which can obstruct the digestive system or even burst the stomach.
Worst of all, Gorilla Glue has a taste and smell that attracts animals. They find it similar to peanut butter and will go after it, chewing through the plastic bottle to get at the stuff inside. Once they have licked it up, disaster results.
Please, if you have this terrible menace in your home, get rid of it, lock it up and make sure no animal or child can get near it. We are working to get the company to put real information on the label to warn people of how dangerous the product really is, but they don't want to lose sales by being truthful, or protect animals by adding something to make the smell and taste less of an attractant to animals. If you can, please support this campaign by emailing the Gorilla Glue company and asking them to protect animals and children = posting a large, explicit warning and adding a flavoring to deter consumption. He is now being excused by supporters on the basis that he is just doing what you must do to win. This isn't change folks. Rather, this is further evidence that you're walking off a cliff with a total unknown.

Now that this change and hope--entirely unsubstantiated either by a record or his most intimate associates--is proving to take a back seat to winning at the political game, what is it that these liberals are holding on to? Why do they still refuse to wake up and realize they've been played to an extent I can barely comprehend. This isn't change; this is less than change. This is an historical hiccup, totally irrational and dangerous.

Meanwhile, Obama is making decorating plans for the White House and patting himself on the back for his non-existent welfare reform accomplishments.
